Double-sign medications need two people to be present to administer the meds to residents. In MediMap, you must do this manually for section 29 meds (those not classified by Medsafe).
- Click the settings icon on the dashboard.
- Click Double Signed Medicines.
- If you need, there are several things you can do here such as:
- Require double signing for all syringe drivers or nurse-initiated medicines (NIMS),
- Let people self-sign all double-sign meds,
- Require double signing for any med given to a resident under 18 years old,
- Require double signing for specific controlled medicines or delivery routes,
- Use med groups (like insulins and analogues) from the Anatomical Therapeutic Chemical Classification System (ATC Codes) to set a med from that group for double signing.
- To set a med for double signing, scroll to Specific Medications.
- Type the med in the search field and select the correct one. MediMap applies the double sign immediately.
- Click Brand and make sure it shows in the double-sign meds list.
- In the next relevant meds round:
- A DS on the medication line indicates that the medication requires two signatures,
- The first person administers the med, then clicks it in the resident’s chart,
- The second person reviews the med administration, enters their username and password to confirm it's correct, and clicks Checked.
- Once staff have recorded the medication as being administered, the second staff member can remotely add to the administration record:
- Click on the name of the medication,
- Click on edit (you will only have the option of adding a comment),
- In the comment box type in something like “checked via facetime, signed on my behalf”. This will add a record under your name with date and time stamp on it.
Note:
If a prescriber has used free text to chart a medication, then double sign cannot be applied.
